TEEN Banned Books Week Movie: The Hate U Give

TEEN Banned Books Week Movie: The Hate U Give In-Person

Join us for a Teen Movie Night!  For ages 13-18.

October 1st-7th is BANNED BOOKS WEEK, which is an annual event that celebrates the Freedom to Read while drawing awareness to current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools.

To spotlight Banned Books Week, we will be watching The Hate U Give, the 2018 move adaptation of Angie Thomas' 2017 book of the same name.  The Hate U Give held the #5 spot on the Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2021 and has been challenged and appeared on banned books lists since it's release for "profanity, violence, and it was thought to promote an anti-police message and indoctrination of a social agenda."

Movie Synopsis:

"A young black student from a poor neighborhood who attends a prep school in an affluent area finds her uneasy life balance further disrupted when she witnesses her childhood friend get shot by a police officer. Caught in the middle of the subsequent turmoil, she is forced to look inside herself and figure out just where she stands in her young life."

Rated PG-13
