Lunch and a Movie: Chicago (2002) In-Person
Bring your lunch (beverages provided) as we kick off our series of summer movie musicals with two classics written and composed by Broadway greats John Kander and Fred Ebb. We begin our summer with the movie that kick-started the movie musical genre for the twenty-first century...and all that jazz! Based on a play by Maurine Dallas Watkins (which was itself inspired by a true story), Chicago tells the Roaring Twenties story of Roxie Hart (Renee Zelleweger), would-be vaudeville star, who is arrested for the murder of her adulterous lover. In jail, she forms a rivalry with Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones), a vaudeville singer who murdered her sister. The two vie for the spotlight and the help of shady lawyer Billy Flynn (Richard Gere), as Roxie finds the fame she’s always dreamed of—proof positive of the phrase “there’s no such thing as bad publicity.” Director Rob Marshall took the unique tack of placing all the musical numbers in Roxie’s imagination. This dynamic, critically acclaimed adaptation of the Broadway hit was the first musical to win Best Picture since 1968. No signups required. Popcorn generously donated by Regal Cinemas.
