Lunch and a Movie: Cabaret (1972)

Lunch and a Movie: Cabaret (1972) In-Person

Bring your lunch (beverages provided) as we kick off our series of summer movie musicals with two classics written and composed by Broadway greats John Kander and Fred Ebb.  Bob Fosse's (rather loose) adaptation of the 1967 stage musical takes us to 1931 Berlin, where young British writer Brian Roberts (Michael York) arrives. He is soon caught up in the decadent life of Weimar Germany--and involved with flighty American singer Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli), headliner at the sleazy Kit Kat Klub. But as their relationship becomes strained due to Brian's bisexuality and Sally's flightiness, the Nazi party is gaining more and more influence, until Brian can no longer ignore its presence. And all the while, the Klub's sinister Emcee (Joel Grey, reprising his stage role) urges the public to forget the real world. What will this growing menace mean to Brian--and to those he's come to care about in Berlin? What are the dangers of thinking “it can’t happen here?” (Warning: this movie alludes to same-sex relationships and abortion, and depicts hate crimes by Nazi sympathizers.) No signups required. Popcorn generously provided by Regal Cinemas.
