Lunch and a Movie: Gigi (1958) In-Person
Bring your lunch (beverages provided) and enjoy the next two films in our summer musical series. This month, we'll focus on two from the legendary Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, starting with this sparkling romantic comedy that takes place in Belle Epoque Paris. Teenaged Gigi (Leslie Caron), despite her misgivings, is being trained by her grandmother and great-aunt in the family tradition of becoming a wealthy man's mistress. She'd rather spend time with family friend Gaston (Louis Jourdan), a wealthy but bored young man who's tired of the phoniness of his social set, who values Gigi's honesty and unpretentious nature. When he realizes Gigi is no longer a child but a lovely young woman, he falls in love with her. But he faces a dilemma: by making her his mistress, he risks destroying her genuine, unaffected nature and turning her into someone no different than the phony, shallow women he's previously been involved with. Can he find the courage to buck the expectations of his social class and put a ring on it? With a superb score that features hit songs like "Thank Heaven For Little Girls", "I Remember It Well", and the title song, this is one of Lerner and Loewe's masterpieces. (Bonus cartoon short: "The Flea Circus", directed by Tex Avery.) No signups required. Popcorn generously donated by Regal Cinemas.
