This long, LONG-awaited adaptation of the Broadway megahit (at least the first part--the second comes out this fall) is based on Gregory Maguire's bestselling novel, and not only shows what might really have been going on behind the story of The Wizard of Oz, but questions whether its villain was all that evil after all. Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo) has been an outcast all her life due to the green skin she was born with. When she arrives at the University of Shiz, she clashes with roommate Glinda (Ariana Grande)...but, once the two find common cause in helping Oz's oppressed talking Animals, they become friends. They also befriend Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), a prince whose shallowness Elphaba challenges. Elphie has always dreamed of learning sorcery and working with the Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum) himself...until she finds out that he is a fraud and is behind the Animals' oppression. She vows to stop the Wizard, who, along with Shiz's headmistress Madame Morrible, starts a propaganda campaign painting Elphaba as a wicked witch. Where will this leave her?
